Living Sustainably: A Journey of Progress and Persistence

The road to living a more sustainable lifestyle starts with a first step.  And sometimes, it feels like a two-step-one step forward and two steps back.  The key, as I like to say, is to keep dancing.  Sustainability isn't about perfection; it's about progress, intention, and resilience.

When my family and I started Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies in 2015, the idea was simple:  to provide a greener alternative to cardboard boxes for local moves.  Every small action can contribute to a larger impact. Renting reusable plastic moving boxes instead of buying disposable cardboard ones reduces waste, saves trees and offers a more convenient solution for packing for local movers.  But starting this company taught me that sustainability is not always straightforward.  It's a journey filled with learning curves and constant adjustments.

Here are few lessons I've learned along the way about living sustainably, both in business and at home:

Start Small and Stay Consistent

Sustainability can feel overwhelming if you try to tackle it all at once.  Instead, focus on small changes that are manageable.  At home, this might mean using reusable grocery bags, toilet paper made from bamboo or fixing things when they break instead of buying something new and throwing out the broken item, or swapping out single-use plastic for more durable alternatives.  In business, it could mean reevaluating your supply chain or finding ways to minimize energy usage.  Small, consistent efforts build momentum.

Embrace Imperfection

No one gets it right 100% of the time.  There will be setbacks.  Maybe you forget your reusable cup at the coffee shop or accidentally purchase something with more packaging that you'd like.  The important thing is to not let perfectionism stop you from trying.  Every step forward matters, even if it's followed by a step back.  Keep dancing.

Educate Yourself and Others-be the example when possible.

Knowledge is power.  Understanding the impact of your choices and educating those around you can create a ripple effect.  For example, when customers rent moving boxes from Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies, they're often surprised to learn how many cardboard boxes we have kept out of the landfill since we started in 2015, nearly 250,000.  Sharing facts like these can inspire others to make changes in their own lives.

Support Local and Sustainable Businesses

Choosing to support businesses that prioritize sustainability can make a big difference.  Whether it's a local farmer's market, a company like ours that offers reusable products, or a brand committed to ethical practices, your dollars have the power to drive change.  By aligning your spending with your values, you're investing in a more sustainable future.

Celebrate Progress

It's easy to focus on what's not perfect, but don't forget to celebrate the wins.  Every time you make a more sustainable choice, you're contributing to a healthier planet.  Those small victories add up over time.  Take pride in the steps you're taking, no matter how small they may seem.

At Elephant Trunk Moving Supplies, our mission is to make moving a little greener and a lot easier.  But beyond the boxes, it's about fostering a mindset of responsibility and progress.  Living sustainably is a commitment to continual improvement, not just for ourselves but for future generations.

So, if you find yourself stumbling on your journey to sustainability, remember; it's okay.  Take a deep breath, refocus, and take another step forward.  And if you're feeling stuck, just keep dancing.  After all, the rhythm of progress is what makes the journey worthwhile.  The End.
